One Roof Community Housing to Offer Resources and Mediation Services to Renters and Landlords with Goal to Reduce Evictions.

On Tuesday, August 25th, One Roof officially launches its Tenant Landlord Connection program with a ribbon cutting ceremony with representatives of the Duluth Chamber of Commerce and an ice cream social featuring product from The King of Creams, a local 4th street family restaurant and ice cream shop.

Years after the former Housing Access Center lost funding in 2009, a grassroots group of community activists, elected officials and area non-profits worked to help establish a resource for renters and landlords to resolve disputes.

This grassroots group selected One Roof to take on the work of the former Housing Access Center. The program is funded by the City of Duluth, St. Louis County, Duluth Housing and Redevelopment Authority, and the Ordean Foundation.

“We’re excited by the opportunity to broaden our affordable housing work here at One Roof,” states Jeff Corey, Executive Director at One Roof. “There are as many as 500 rental-related court filings in Duluth every year, each costing thousands of dollars to landlords, renters and the community as a whole. We believe we can make a positive difference assisting landlords and tenants with conflicts.”

Building upon and expanding the work of the former Housing Access Center, One Roof’s Tenant Landlord Connection (TLC) program will work to provide education, information, and problem solving assistance to improve tenant-landlord relations and work toward preventing evictions.

One Roof Community Housing, as a 501c3 non-profit, offers affordable homeownership opportunities, multifamily development, down-payment assistance, homebuyer education & counseling and home renovation lending, which all work together to create healthier neighborhoods and increased opportunities for low-to-moderate income people in the community to become homeowners. One Roof is recognized for having one of the most dynamic systems for engaging and supporting its Land Trust homeowners in Duluth, Proctor, Hermantown, Two Harbors and Cloquet.

In 2011, the boards of Neighborhood Housing Services (founded in 1983) and Northern Communities Land Trust (founded in 1991) voted to merge the two organizations into one. The result was the formation of One Roof Community Housing on January 1, 2012. Together, as One Roof, we bring to the community over 50 years of combined experience in providing housing services and building and sustaining affordable homes and healthy neighborhoods.
